#208 Lil Wayne, 'Tha Carter III' (2008)

How does it go from Run-DMC’s ‘Raising Hell,’ to this? Following on from the second instalment of this record at #370, we get a 16-track record of more of the same. Another appearance by Robin Thicke, as well as contributions from JAY-Z, T-Pain, Babyface and Busta Rhymes. It won 3 of its 4 nominations at the Grammys and has been certified 6x Platinum.

Look, this album is not without its merits. I enjoyed ‘Mr. Carter,’ the collab with JAY-Z, ‘A Milli’ intrigued me, especially it’s jab at Andre 3000 about Erykah Badu, but the song is so mind numbingly repetitive. ‘Got Money’ is a fun track, but the auto-tuned vocals drive me a bit nuts. ‘Dr. Carter’ is a great song, quite enjoyed it. ‘Tie My Hands’ with Thicke, is the sexiest and smooth track on the album. Also liked ‘Let The Beat Build.’ Like I said, it’s not without its merits, there are some decent songs on the record, but overall, there are so many better albums preceding this one, so many great albums that were probably bumped because of this one. Hopefully this is the last one, as I don’t need more Lil Wayne in my life.
