#254 Herbie Hancock, 'Head Hunters' (1973)
I can’t remember who it was, but last year someone told me to listen to this record. I never actually got around to it and only remembered when I went to listen to it now and noticed that it was already saved to my Spotify library. The first Jazz record to sell over a million copies, on this, his 12th record, Hancock assembled a completely new band. The rhythm section had their roots in Rhythm and Blues.
The album was a major departure from his traditional Jazz sounds. This album was a mix of Jazz, funk, soul and Rhythm & Blues. Not only an inspiration to artists of the afore-mentioned genres, it was a major influence on Hip Hop and Pop too, seeing artists such as J Dilla, Madonna, 2Pac, Nas and over a hundred other artists sample songs on this record for their own. The album was added to the National Recording Registry by The Library Of Congress. I enjoyed the hell out of this one. Easy to listen to and completely enjoyable.
