#293 The Breeders, 'Last Splash' (1993)

New Entry

What originally started off as a side project, The Breeders became Kim Deal’s main gig following the sudden break up of Pixies (in the most ‘90s move ever, Black Francis informed her of the break up via fax). Joining Deal on lead guitar is twin sister, Kelley. On this, their second album, Breeders offered up the alt-radio staple, ‘Cannonball.’ Kim Deal’s vocals are familiar yet the music is completely different to her previous band.

Following the release of this record, drug and alcohol issues forced the band into hiatus with both sisters doing separate stints in rehab. The album would go on to be certified platinum, leaving a lasting legacy. The Prodigy famously sampled the guitar in ‘S.O.S.’ for the main hook in their hit single, ‘Firestarter.’ The Breeders were an inspiration for little girls yearning to be rockstars and blazed trails for the next generation of artists such as Wolf Alice, HAIM, Paramore, Bully and Dream Wife.
