#312 Solange, 'A Seat at the Table' (2016)

New Entry

When this album first came out, I remember seeing someone tweet something alone the lines of “Finally, a Knowles I can get on with.” If older sister, Beyoncé is the RnB pop megastar, little sister, Solange is her alternative counterpart. ‘A Seat At The Table’ was one of the surprise releases of 2016, winning Knowles a Grammy for lead single, ‘Cranes In The Sky’ in the category of Best R&B Performance. The album features artists the likes of Q-Tip, Lil Wayne, BJ The Chicago Kid and Kelly Rowland, amongst others; a testament Solange.

Solange experimented with different sounds and genres on this record, truly stepping out of the shadow of her older sister. I landed up listening to the album twice and enjoyed it even more on the second listen once the songs were a little more familiar. I had originally listened at the end of 2016 on the suggestion of a friend after posting my list of favourite albums of the year. Would I have included it had I discovered it earlier? Not entirely sure, but it definitely is an album that I enjoy more and more on every listen.
