#340 Snoop Doggy Dogg, 'Doggystyle' (1993)
One of the most distinctive voices in Hip Hop, Snoop Dogg (or Snoop Doggy Dogg, as he is credited on this record), makes his first appearance in the list. Having been introduced to the world the previous year on Dr. Dre’s debut solo album, ‘The Chronic,’ Snoop continued with the sound established on that record, albeit with his own unique sound. Snoop helped popularise the subgenre of G-Funk aka Gangsta Funk; Hip Hop that was heavily influenced by the 1970s funk of Parliament-Funkadelic (remember when I said George Clinton was the godfather of Hip Hop? That claim has come home to roost with this record). This album was the fastest selling Hip Hop album of all time at that point (later surpassed by Eminem’s ‘The Marshall Mathers LP), it sold 800,000+ in one week.
Featuring one of his most iconic songs, ‘Gin N Juice,’ a song that is just the epitome of early ‘90s Hip Hop. And then there’s his signature song, ‘Who Am I (What’s My Name)?,’ which heavily samples George Clinton’s ‘Atomic Dog.’ Snoop’s flow is like no other, and he’s gotta be the coolest rapper of all time. A worthy addition to a list that was severely lacking the S N double O P D O double gizee.
