#348 Gillian Welch, 'Time (The Revelator)' (2001)

The third album from alt-country artist, Gillian Welch, along with her partner (musical and romantic), Dave Rawlings, is a stunning record that deserves your attention. Her vocals, in fact the intermingling of their vocals together are a joy to listen to. The two are so in sync that they recorded the almost 15-minute closing track, ‘I Dream A Highway’ without ever having played it before. They just hit record and let the magic happen.

I could imagine this album being played in crowded bar in Nashville, crowded yet so quiet that you could hear the pair’s fingers scraping up and down the strings. The album was nominated for Best Contemporary Folk Album at The Grammys in 2002 but lost out to Bob Dylan’s ‘Love and Theft’ (#411 on this list). They also received 4 nominations in the inaugural Americana Music Association Awards that same year. I’d never listened to Gillian Welch before and I’m looking forward to exploring more of her catalogue.
