#360 Funkadelic, 'One Nation Under a Groove' (1978)

It took just 3 albums for George Clinton to appear again. I’ll be absolutely honest – I don’t really know the difference between Parliament and Funkadelic. These days they tour as Parliament-Funkadelic, so it’s likely I’m not the only one confused. This album was Funkadelic’s most commercially successful album and is considered by many as the greatest funk album of all time. As previously mentioned, George Clinton was a hip hop innovator before hip hop was even a thing.

The title track has been sampled almost 100 times by artists like Snoop Dogg, Ice Cube, Queen Latifah, D’Angelo – the list goes on. But for me, the most prominent sample of the song is on Janet Jackson’s single, ‘Go Deep’ (it’s been slowed down about half a step). The song is considered Funkadelic’s signature song, having sold over a million copies, the only single of theirs to do so. “Do you promise to funk?/The whole funk, nothin' but the funk,” well, how could you not?
