#401 Blondie, 'Blondie' (1975)
ONE. HUNDRED. ALBUMS. DOWN. The album, initially a flop, saw the band terminating their contract with Private Stock and signing with Chrysalis Records, who re-released the album. The re-release saw the album hit #14 on the charts in Australia, with the single, ‘In The Flesh,’ going #2. As the story goes, the iconic Molly Meldrum meant to play the actual single, ‘X Offender’ (originally titled ‘Sex Offender’) but accidentally played the B-side, ‘In The Flesh.’ The single shot to #2 on the charts, the album became a success and the rest is history. Blondie broke out of Australia.
I’ve listened to a few Blondie records, and I know all the hits well, but I’ve never listened to this one. It was totally not what I expected. It sounded like a New Wave version of 1950s and 1960s girl groups. Kinda like what Rockabilly is to 1950s Rock n’ Roll. This can probably be attributed to producer, Richard Gottehrer, who wrote and produced songs such as ‘My Boyfriend’s Back,’ by The Angels, and ‘I Want Candy,’ by The Strangeloves.
