#414 Chic, 'Risqué' (1979)
One of the greatest Disco records ever helmed by the true master of the genre, Nile Rodgers, as well as his long-time cohort, Bernard Edwards. The album starts with the iconic ‘Good Times’ (a mainstay on my party playlists), a song that was not only important to the Disco movement, but also a major part of early Hip Hop (‘Rappers Delight’ was based on this song). Nile Rodgers’ chucking guitar style, couple with Bernard Edwards’ bass playing is one of the greatest pairings in the history of music. The bass refrain in this song contains 20 notes (I independently confirmed this).
This album is the perfect counterargument to anyone claiming that there’s no substance to Disco. And while the rest of the album is great, the rest of the songs pale in comparison to ‘Good Times’ (not because they’re subpar, but just became it’s so good). Off the back of his success with Chic, Nile Rodgers would go on to make hit records for Madonna, David Bowie, Duran Duran and had a major career resurgence with Daft Punk.
