#464 The Isley Brothers, '3 + 3' (1973)

New Entry

New Entry

This album opens with a very familiar yet unfamiliar guitar and bass line. I’d never heard the song, ‘That Lady, Pts. 1 & 2’ before, yet I know this so well. I searched the depths of my brain and realised that it was heavily sampled in the song ‘i,’ from Kendrick Lamar’s landmark album, ‘To Pimp A Butterfly.’ It was always excites me to randomly stumble upon an original song that I know so well from a sample.

On this album, the band expanded from their core three members to six, including younger brothers Ernie & Marvin, as well as their brother-in-law. Also include the hits ‘What It Comes Down To,’ as well as their perfect take on Seals & Croft’s ‘Summer Breeze.’ This album, packed with funky cuts, actually became the band’s first platinum-selling record. And how pimping is the album cover?!
