#495 Boyz II Men, 'II' (1994)
The second studio album by Boys II Men (the title gives that away). Boys II Men were ubiquitous in the mid ‘90s. Signed to Motown, the label that brought us Marvin Gaye, The Jackson 5 and Stevie Wonder, amongst many others, Boys II Men were standing on the shoulders of giants. And in their footsteps they were to follow, going on to sell 25 million records in the States alone.
The album opens up with almost completely acapella song, ‘Thank You.’ Great start to the record. It also features the Babyface-penned mega-hit, ‘I’ll Make Love To You.’ That song was inescapable in 1994/5. It landed up become the third best performing song of the ‘90s. That song goes straight into ‘On Bended Knee,’ another smash, this time written by Janet Jackson collaborators, Jimmy Jam & Terry Lewis. Also notable for something else – the first Lennon/McCartney entry on the list thanks to their great cover of ‘Yesterday.’ I’m pretty confident to say that it’s the first of MANY.
