#475 Sheryl Crow, 'Sheryl Crow' (1996)

New Entry

This album was a powerhouse. In 1996 you souldn’t go anywhere without hearing Sheryl Crow. I’ve never given Sheryl Crow the time of day, really. As she had such major commercial hits, I never thought of her further than that. How wrong I was. This record is great. Produced by Crow, with her playing almost all the instruments too. A bit more twangy than I expected, but I like it. The album is varied yet cohesive.

There are three songs on the record co-written by longtime Michael Jackson collaborator/producer, which is no surprise as Sheryl Crow started out as a backing vocalist on Jackson’s ‘Bad’ tour. Also involved as assistant producer and multi-instrumentalist is Mitchell Froom, who is known for producing the first three Crowded House records. Speaking of which, Neil Finn, Crowded House’s lead vocalist, sings backing vocals on the album. One of the instruments Crow didn’t play on the record was drums, which saw Jim Keltner behind the kit (John Lennon, George Harrison, Ringo Starr and literally hundreds of others).

The album has been certified 3x Platinum & won 2 Grammys (including Best Rock Album). A major surprise, I enjoyed the hell out of this.
