#476 Sparks, 'Kimono My House' (1974)

New Entry

New Entry

Third album by the whimsical Sparks. With this record, the band (now essentially a duo of the Mael Brothers) relocated from the US to the UK. They shifted their sound to a more prog rock/glam rock type sound, slotting in nicely amongst contemporaries Roxy Music and David Bowie.

This record is a lot more interesting and fun than I expected it to be. I worked on a record by Sparks a few years ago and it was quirky, to say the least. This album actually puts that one in context. This album has been cited by countless musicians as a major influence on their careers and playing, including Morrissey (The Smiths), John Frusciante (Red Hot Chili Peppers) & Steve Jones (Sex Pistols). It’s actually an album that I think I’ll be returning to. On second listen, I found so much more than I did on the first listen and I expect further listens to be the same.
