#481 Belle and Sebastian, 'If You’re Feeling Sinister' (1996)

New Entry

The breakthrough record by Scottish indie pop band, Belle and Sebastian. While this was their second record, it was their first for indie label, Jeepster Records. Amazingly, one of their conditions of signing was that they would not release singles, do any press or promotional events or appear in any promotional material. I can tell you first hand, that’s not the textbook way to sell a record. Regardless, it was very well received across the board cementing Belle and Sebastian in the annals of 90’s indie music.

I don’t know why, but this music reminds me of watching rain running down the window pane whilst drinking a cup of tea on a Saturday. Pleasant but not quite how you expected to spend your day. Tracks that stood out for me were ‘Me and the Major,’ ‘Like Dylan In The Movies,’ the title track and ‘The Stars Of Track and Field.’ Believe it or not, there was a stage of my life that I’d hear about Belle and Sebastian every day at least once. If you know, you know.
